Canada's Rivers
Canadians deserve to know the state of their country’s watersheds. Unfortunately, Canada does not have an easily accessible national system for reporting the health of freshwater ecosystems across the country and the threats they face.
WWF Canada published the Watershed Reports in 2017 and 2020 to address this issue. The next edition will be published by Water Rangers in 2024.
WWF Canada developed an assessment framework in consultation with leading freshwater scientists and used that framework to produce reports on Canadian rivers’ health and threats. To date, this report assesses all of Canada’s 25 major watersheds.
This website — watershedreports.wwf.ca — presents the results in an interactive format designed to engage Canadians and raise awareness about the watershed they live in.
The last national re-assessment took place in 2020, following up on the recommendations from the 2017 Watershed Reports. We must continue to take action on the threats facing Canada’s watersheds. Click here to download the 2020 report.
